Ópus Reykjavík is an interdisciplinary art series bringing artists, audiences, and ideas together in Reykjavík.

Founded in Reykjavík in 2025 by singer and visual artist Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Ópus Reykjavík brings Icelandic and international artists together across music, visual art, literature, performance, design, and other creative fields. Through performances, exhibitions, conversations, workshops, and new commissions, Ópus Reykjavík creates opportunities for artists from different disciplines, generations, and cultural backgrounds to meet, exchange ideas, and work together.

The name Ópus Reykjavík comes from the Latin opus, meaning work or creation.
At the centre of Ópus Reykjavík is the idea that new work can grow out of collaboration — when artists with different practices and perspectives are given the time and space to encounter one another.

Ópus Reykjavík is inspired by the collaborative nature of opera, where music, voice, theatre, visual art, architecture, movement, costume, light, and design come together to create a single work. Ópus Reykjavík takes this spirit beyond the opera house, bringing artists into new combinations and contexts.

Ópus Reykjavík is interested in exchange between generations, cultures, and artistic communities. The programme brings together artists at different stages
of their careers, creating space for established practices as well as new ideas. Not every encounter needs to result in a finished work. A conversation, a workshop, or a shared experience can be the beginning of something that continues long after an individual event has ended.

Reykjavík is an important part of how Ópus Reykjavík works. Events can take place in concert halls, galleries, churches, studios, libraries, public spaces, and other locations throughout the city. The choice of space is connected to the artists and the work, allowing architecture, acoustics, light, landscape, and the character of a particular place to influence the experience.

For visiting artists, Ópus Reykjavík offers an opportunity to experience Reykjavík not simply as a destination, but as a place to work and create. At the same time, Ópus Reykjavík invites Icelandic artists and audiences to encounter international artists in more intimate and unexpected settings.

The scale of Reykjavík also makes it possible to create a sense of closeness between artists and audiences. Ópus Reykjavík wants these encounters to extend beyond the traditional performance setting — through conversations, workshops, masterclasses, and opportunities to meet artists in a more informal context.

Ópus Reykjavík unfolds through several editions throughout the year. Each edition has its own artists, themes, locations, and format, and may bring together several events into one programme. A major performance might sit alongside an intimate conversation; an exhibition might lead into a concert; a workshop might become the starting point for a new collaboration.

There is no fixed format for what an edition of Ópus Reykjavík should be. The artists, the work, and the place help shape each programme. At its heart, Ópus Reykjavík is about bringing people and artistic practices together — creating opportunities to experience, learn, collaborate, and encounter something new.

The programme for Ópus 1, taking place in December 2026, will be announced soon.
